How to Clean Your Dishwasher and Keep It Fresh

A dishwasher makes everyday kitchen cleaning more convenient by helping remove food residue and grease from plates, glasses and utensils. However, the appliance itself also needs regular cleaning to maintain its performance and prevent unpleasant smells.

1. Remove Food Residue After Washing

Small food particles can collect around the bottom of your dishwasher after a wash cycle. If left unattended, this debris may contribute to unpleasant smells and affect drainage.

After the dishwasher has cooled, inspect the bottom of the appliance and remove any visible food residue.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions before removing any components, and avoid reaching into areas that may contain sharp objects.

2. Clean the Dishwasher Filter

The dishwasher filter catches food particles and other debris during washing. When it becomes clogged, water may drain poorly and food residue can remain on dishes.

Follow these steps to clean it:

  1. Switch off the dishwasher and allow it to cool.
  2. Locate the filter using your appliance manual.
  3. Remove it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Rinse away trapped food particles under running water.
  5. Use a soft brush if permitted by the manufacturer.
  6. Reinstall the filter securely before using the dishwasher again.

Clean the filter regularly, especially if you use your dishwasher frequently.

3. Wipe the Door and Rubber Seals

The edges of a dishwasher door and its rubber seals can collect grease, moisture and small food particles.

Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe these areas. Pay attention to corners and folds where residue can accumulate.

Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemicals that may damage the seals. Always follow the cleaning recommendations in your dishwasher manual.

4. Clean the Spray Arms

Spray arms distribute water throughout the dishwasher during a wash cycle. Blocked openings can interfere with water flow and cleaning performance.

Inspect the spray arms for visible food particles or mineral deposits. If the manufacturer permits removal, clean them according to the appliance instructions.

Do not force objects into the openings or use tools that could damage them.

5. Use the Correct Dishwasher Detergent

Choosing the right detergent is essential for effective automatic dishwashing.

Automatic dishwashers require specially formulated, low-foaming detergent. Ordinary hand dishwashing liquid can produce excessive foam and may cause the appliance to overflow.

Always use a product specifically labelled for your type of dishwasher, and follow the recommended dosage.
